Statement

Multiple layers of design, such as tessellated patterns, or iconic use of regular and irregular polygons can overlap each other through a layering process. As the designs overlap, I subjectively identify aspects to enhance through use of color and additional line work to conjoin or divide shapes. Thus ‘meaning’ emerges responsively based on the underlying visual structure created by the initial overlapped geometric designs. That the forces of nature such as mineral life or topographical features appear to adaptively utilize geometric patterning is what fascinates me the most. Within my own art practice I work to mimic that responsive aspect of the natural formation of physical patterns and forms perceptible in the world.

Multiple layers of design, such as tessellated patterns, or iconic use of regular and irregular polygons can overlap each other through a layering process. As the designs overlap, I subjectively identify aspects to enhance through use of color and additional line work to conjoin or divide shapes. In this drawing, Up and Under, abstract use of shapes and patterns combine to prominently display the responsiveness between the layered shapes. The top middle of the drawing features a ‘window’ into the design process where the underlying layers are not completely filled in, allowing the viewer to more clearly interpret the process.
