Statement
My work begins with careful observation of natural surfaces such as rocks and shells, where tonal contours often suggest bird-like forms. By tracing and extending these shapes, I build dense fields of interlocking motifs that repeat across multiple scales. Although the drawings are created intuitively rather than algorithmically, they frequently reveal self-similar structures associated with fractals. Transformations such as mirroring can make larger forms visible within the pattern. Through this process I explore the intersection of perception, artistic intuition, and mathematical structure.

The Grebe: A Quilted Fractal Field
137.0 x 102.0 cm
Digitally printed fabric quilt, machine quilted
2026
The Grebe is a quilted textile work derived from an intuitively generated drawing based on tonal contours observed on beach rocks. Bird-like motifs—eyes, beaks, and wings—were traced and extended digitally to form a dense network of interlocking shapes across multiple scales. The image was mirrored to produce a kaleidoscopic symmetry, revealing larger bird profiles emerging from smaller motifs and emphasizing the drawing’s self-similar fractal structure. The final image was printed onto fabric and machine quilted.
