Statement

In the epilogue of Spherical Models (1979), Magnus J. Wenninger expresses the hope that readers might be encouraged to “study more deeply the mathematics involved in both the classification and the design of these forms.” This hope became a starting point for my own work. Wenninger’s models rely on triangular bands that assemble into complex spherical forms, which encouraged me to explore different combinations of shapes. By introducing coloured variations and arranging them in deliberate patterns, I highlight relationships that might have otherwise remained hidden. The colour functions not as decoration, but as a visual tool to draw attention to the geometric systems that organise on the surface of these spheres.

This model has been derived from a 6 frequency geodesic dome, with some of the triangular bands removed. Those that remain are grouped together to create 60 identical irregular non-convex hexagonal bands. The model shows 12 interlocking pentagons of 4 colours, arranged to create a sphere that displays a dodecahedral colour pattern.
